I've been playing with an idea for Dynamics 365 and Power Platform demos and quick proofs of concept:
What if Codex could learn the repeatable workflow around a Dataverse project, not just generate code?
Building a Dataverse deployment skill
I built a custom Dataverse deployment skill and kept tweaking the instructions until it could reliably help with things like:
- Checking the target environment.
- Reading deployment configuration.
- Validating Power Platform CLI (PAC) authentication.
- Packaging JavaScript and plugins.
- Deploying targeted changes.
- Reading enough metadata and context to avoid guessing.
I know there are already Dataverse skills out there, including Microsoft's Dataverse Skills work. For me, this was less about creating a new Dataverse capability and more about learning how to teach Codex a workflow I already know well.
Testing the workflow
The skill itself was the experiment. Once the skill instructions were in place, I tested the workflow with prompts like:
Update this validation logic and deploy the affected web resources using the Dataverse Deploy skill.
The interesting part wasn't really the code generation. It was watching Codex get more reliable once the workflow itself became part of the skill:
- Where configuration lives.
- When to build first.
- What environment details to print before deployment.
- When to stop and ask for confirmation.
- What should never be assumed.

Where this helps
This isn't a replacement for application lifecycle management (ALM), pipelines, or release processes. Those still exist for a reason.
What I found useful was the demo and proof-of-concept phase, where you're making changes, deploying, validating, tweaking, and repeating the cycle over and over.
Having Codex handle the repeatable parts made that loop noticeably faster and more consistent.
That part changed my perspective a bit. The value may not just be AI generating code. It may be teaching AI the workflows around the code.
This is an area I want to keep exploring for Dataverse and Power Platform projects.
